"When my mum became ill, the Mountbatten team stepped in to support her and our family. I don't think we could have done it without them. After seeing how Mum was cared for, I knew I wanted to do that. I wanted to support people in the way she had been supported. That's why I became a Mountbatten nurse."

My name is Lauren, and I am a Staff Nurse in the Community Clinical Team at Mountbatten. In my role, I am honoured to provide comfort, reassurance and care for patients and their families during their end-of-life journey.

Some people in our community aren’t aware Mountbatten’s care does not stop at 5pm. We provide 24-hour, seven-day-a-week free care to patients and families across the Island in their own homes.

Every year, a Mountbatten community nurse will have multiple contacts with around 650 patients, either over the phone or in-person visits. Whilst this work is a privilege, it also comes with its challenges, and the demand for our specialised care often exceeds our available resources.

As an independent charity, Mountbatten relies on the generosity of the local community to fund our services. Only around a third of our funding comes from the NHS; the rest comes from people like you. Together, we can ensure people in our local communities will face death and dying with a Mountbatten nurse by their side.

Lauren and Amber share their stories of how they are there throughout the night, offering advice, support, and medications to people like Lauren's mum.
