“I feel lucky to have had Mountbatten by my side when I needed them most, and this is my way of giving something back."

A gift in your Will is more than a donation—it’s a promise that no one has to face the end of life alone. Like your fellow Mountbatten supporter, Liz Runco, you can help ensure that others find care, comfort, and support when they need it most.

For Liz and her husband Joe, Mountbatten was a lifeline in their most difficult times.

“When Joe was diagnosed with terminal cancer, we didn’t know where to turn. I was so frightened. The doctors told us there was nothing more they could do except for palliative care – we didn’t even know what palliative care was! We had no support from anyone until I got in touch with Mountbatten.”

Mountbatten changed everything for Liz and Joe. Together, they found comfort in the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the John Cheverton Centre at our hospice building in Newport.

“It wasn’t a dark place like I imagined; it was bright, happy, and full of life. Joe loved it. And when his condition worsened, he was admitted to the inpatient unit. I was so relieved because I was exhausted. I knew he would be well looked after, and that’s all I wanted for him. He loved the staff—everyone was so kind, considerate, and compassionate.”

And when Joe died, Liz was not alone. Mountbatten Isle of Wight was there for her, helping her navigate the overwhelming grief and loneliness that followed.

“I did not see any point in going on until Mountbatten saved me. I was all over the place. I just didn’t know what to do. Thankfully, they were there in my hour of need, just as they were for Joe when he was dying.”

Liz has never forgotten the impact of ‘wonderful Mountbatten’. To ensure no one faces death, dying, or bereavement alone, she has pledged to leave a gift in her Will.

A gift in your Will ensures that Mountbatten will be there to comfort and care for future generations. Your legacy will be the nurse who visits in the middle of the night, the medicine and equipment that brings comfort and dignity, and the bereavement support that helps loved ones rebuild their lives.
