Mountbatten became their lifeline, providing expert care for Pookie and support for Sue during his final months. In 2023, Sue Walked the Wight with her nephew by her side, as Pookie’s health declined. “That walk became so poignant,” she says. “By then, we knew his time was limited, and it gave me a sense of purpose and connection to something bigger.” After Pookie died in October 2023, Sue began volunteering at Mountbatten and continued to take part in Walk the Wight, even completing her miles aboard a cruise ship last year, walking 27 miles around the deck. “It was the 35th anniversary of Walk the Wight, and I wanted to be part of it, no matter where I was,” she says. “The cruise docked on the same day as Walk the Wight, and I went straight from the ship to Carisbrooke to collect my medal!” “I want people to experience the same incredible care that Pookie and I received.” Sue with her husband, Steve, known as 'Pookie'. Sue’s fundraising efforts are incredibly important to her. “I want people to experience the same incredible care that Pookie and I received,” she explains. Over the years, Sue has inspired friends and family, even as far as Australia, to support Mountbatten. “It’s amazing to see how far the impact of Walk the Wight can reach. It’s not just an Island event - it’s a global one.” This year, Sue is forming “Team Pookie” to take on the challenge once more. “There’s something magical about Walk the Wight,” she says. “The whole Island comes together, and you feel this amazing sense of community and connection. It's truly something everyone should experience.” Choose your Walk the Wight 2026 route. With five routes to choose from, there's a walk for everyone – including your four-legged friend!
