On Sunday, 6 April, a team of dedicated nurses, staff, and supporters from Mountbatten Isle of Wight joined thousands of runners at the ABP Southampton Marathon, proudly representing the charity in the half marathon. Among the team were sister Theresa, her son Dan McNamara, staff nurse Mark O’Brien, deputy sister Julie, staff nurse Lauren Wheeldon, pharmacist Heather Ebdon, Ashley, and supporter Trudie Knight, all running to raise awareness and vital funds for Mountbatten.

For Theresa, the day was filled with emotion as she ran in memory of her father, Jimmy Mullan, who died eight months ago:

“It was emotional, but the atmosphere was amazing,” she said. “I thought about my dad, what Mountbatten did for us as a family, and the patients I’d seen just the day before. Those thoughts got me through the tough moments.”

Theresa described the highlight of the day as the team’s camaraderie:

“We started together, wishing each other well at the Mountbatten tent, and then ran our own races. Seeing everyone at the finish line was so special.”

Mark O’Brien, who ran with his daughter despite recovering from broken ribs, echoed the team spirit:

“It’s mind over matter. The support from the crowd and the Mountbatten tent was incredible. It’s a privilege to be part of such a special team.”

Helen O’Brien, Head of Fundraising, reflected on the significance of the day:

"The determination and dedication of our Isle of Wight team were truly inspiring. The atmosphere was electric, and it was wonderful to see so many people coming together to support Mountbatten. Every step they took will help us continue to provide care and support to those who need it most."

Together, the Mountbatten Isle of Wight team raised over £1,500 to support patients and families across the Island.
