In March 2026, in support of Mountbatten Isle of Wight, a group of fundraisers will take on an epic fundraising adventure: Sledding over 240km through untouched natural landscapes and tending to a pack of husky dogs, before finishing at Sweden's world famous Ice Hotel.

Vanda and Craig, what made you take on the Lapland Husky Trail Challenge with Mountbatten Isle of Wight?

As Craig approaches the big 60, what better way to celebrate than complete a fundraiser for such a worthwhile and essential cause?

We have both worked or volunteered for Mountbatten Isle of Wight over the last two decades and have seen first hand the wonderful work carried out.

We see this as an opportunity to step up our contribution whilst having a unique, memorable experience.

How are you feeling about the challenge?

Nervous and excited! We have been dog sledging before on holiday and it was great fun! However, six days in such a remote environment and in the extreme cold weather will be a real test.

What are you most looking forward to?

For Vanda, it’s being away from the hum-drum of everyday life and enjoying the wide-open spaces and snowy scenery. For Craig, it’s the nature, wildlife and forming a bond with the dog team.

What do you think will be the most challenging part?

The physical challenge and the below freezing temperatures. Dog sledding is hard work and physical strength is needed to hold onto the sled to avoid the dogs leaving you behind!

For training, Vanda’s doing Body Pump classes and Craig’s getting out on his bike! "We are becoming stronger and improving our endurance to prepare ourselves", they said. Vanda’s biggest worry, however, is about the lack of toilet facilities.

Why Mountbatten Isle of Wight?

We are Islanders and Mountbatten has been part of our community for as long as we can remember. Craig’s dad was given excellent care by the hospice and his mum has had help from them too. Mountbatten Isle of Wight has supported many friends and family over the years.
