The Scott Trial, which has been held annually since 1914, has sections which traverse moorland, treacherous rocks and streams. One of the UK’s toughest events of its kind, it gets underway at 9.30am, near Richmond in Yorkshire. Aged 60, John Coombes will be the oldest first-time rider in the history of the event. Together with his (younger) brother, Mark, who has previously competed twice, John has been riding motorbikes since his school days. The Scott Trial covers over 80 off-road miles, divided into more than 70 sections. John and Mark are accepting donations for Mountbatten Isle of Wight, as part of their plans to compete. Staying ahead is another matter, although success in trials riding is about dexterity and balance on the machine, rather than speed.” They are aiming to raise £1,000 for Mountbatten Isle of Wight.
