Nine-year-old Theo Jeffers, a pupil at Newport CE Primary School, is taking part in this year’s Schools Walk the Wight to raise funds for Mountbatten Isle of Wight, inspired by the care we gave his nanny.

Theo remembers how Mountbatten made his nanny feel comfortable and surrounded by love during her final days. “Even though she was poorly, she felt safe here, and that made me happy,” he shared. Mountbatten also supported Theo and his family, providing counselling during a very difficult time.

Theo’s mum, April, reflected on the support they received: “It wasn’t just about caring for my mum; Mountbatten supported all of us. They made a really hard time feel less overwhelming, and it was such a comfort to know we weren’t alone.”

Last year, Theo completed a half-marathon over a week, raising over £300. He found the experience incredibly rewarding, especially watching the donations grow. “I loved watching the total go up and knowing I was helping,” Theo said.

This year, Theo is excited to join Schools Walk the Wight, saying, “Mountbatten helped my nanny, and they helped me, too. I want to help them.”

April added, “Theo’s fundraising has been such a positive experience for him. It’s given him a way to channel his feelings and do something meaningful in memory of his nanny. We’re so proud of him.”

Theo describes Mountbatten as “amazing and kind” and is looking forward to earning his medal. He hopes other children will enjoy fundraising just as much as he does. “It’s fun! You make people happy, and your family proud,” he said.
