The University of Exeter’s Dr Tia DeNora has delivered the Francis Sheldon Memorial Lecture, focusing on her ground-breaking two-year research project at Mountbatten Isle of Wight.

Professor DeNora told delegates she had not had a single lightbulb moment, rather a series of realisations as a result of her work.

She said: "There were lots and lots of pinpoints. Think of it as a tapestry.

"I am developing some notions of what we might learn from my study.

“Think about how people use space; about managerial style and careful risk-taking; the nature of communities and how that is a resource for facing death dying and bereavement; and understand hospices are activist.

"Rants are vital,” she added.
